Dracula: POV

I read Dracula and the main literary element is point of view. The entire book is made of journals where each chapter is part of a journal from one of the main characters. The main journal entries are of Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, and Dr. Seward. The different journals all start like different stories but they are all connected somehow. Only half way through does the POVs converge on to the same story.

The different POVs increase the reader's need to think about the plot. To find out more about Dracula the reader must find out what is common between the journals. Only by applying knowledge from two of the journals can you know what is happening with the other. Example: at one point Dracula is sucking Lucy's blood daily. You don't know until you learn from Mina's journal that Lucy's is becoming paler by the day and is becoming weak and from learning about Dracula's behavior in Jonathan's journal.
